  • Contains Postbiotics, supported by peer reviewed scientific research. Postbiotics have been shown to support immune function and digestive health, as well as helping to manage stress.

  • Probiotic from live Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast (2.5 x 1010 cfu per 30g serve) to support the microbiome and confer a health benefit to the horse.

  • Prebiotics, from short chain fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), to support a healthy microbiota, especially during times of stress and diet change.

  • Targeted nutrition to support the horse during times of digestive disturbance, stress or illness, as well as support for the performance and competition horse.

  • BETA NOPS and UFAS accredited, making Opti-Biome Powder suitable for horses competing under FEI regulations and the Rules of Racing by reducing the risk of our products containing prohibited substances.

Product Information

Opti-Biome supports the microbiome and digestive system to promote health, with a unique formulation of prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics. Providing targeted nutrition to support the horse during times of digestive disturbance, stress or illness, during antibiotic therapy, as well as support for the performance and competition horse, with frequent travel and an intense training programme.

Postbiotics were defined in 2019 by the International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) as:

“a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host”. Postbiotics are a microbial fermentate, which is composed of hundreds of bioactive compounds. These bioactives work synergistically with the biology of the horse to support health and performance. Postbiotics include beneficial compounds such as mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS) and beta-glucans, as well as hundreds of functional metabolites including: phytosterols, organic acids, antioxidants (polyphenols), nucleotides, peptides, proteins, vitamins, mnerals, carbohydrates, phospholipids, oligosaccharides and short-chain fatty acids.

The postbiotic included in Opti-Biome has published, peer-reviewed research to support its use in the horse.  Postbiotics benefit the horse by:

  • Maintaining optimal gut function and a healthy gut microbiome
  • Helping manage everyday stress
  • Supporting quick exercise recovery
  • Supporting healthy joints

Probiotics, as defined by the FAO and WHO are “live microorganisms, that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”. Opti-biome contains the only licenced live probiotic for horses Saccharomyces cerevisiae with 2.5 x 1010 cfu per 30g serve. Probiotics benefit the horse by:

  • Helping fibre digestion, the yeast helps to pull the fibre particle apart. This enables the fibre digesting bacteria to colonize and digest the fibre more readily, producing volatile fatty acids (VFA’s) which are a vital energy source for the horse.
  • Scavenging pockets of oxygen in the gut, which would otherwise be toxic to many of the beneficial microbes.
  • Outcompeting the lactic acid producing microbes and encouraging the growth of those which can use lactic acid, thus helping to reduce the likelihood of a drop in hindgut pH which can disrupt the delicate balance in the microbiome.

Prebiotics have been defined as a selectively fermented ingredient that results in specific changes in the composition and/or activity of the gastrointestinal microbiota, thus conferring benefit(s) upon host health. Prebiotics are typically fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), usually obtained from sugar beet, but are also naturally found in a number of vegetables of fruits such as chicory, onions, asparagus roots, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes, leeks and bananas.

Unlike most carbohydrates, these FOSs are largely unaffected by stomach acid, and other digestive enzymes, but instead, they are selectively fermented by many of the beneficial bacteria in the hindgut. In other words, they act as a food source for, and selectively encourage the growth and activity of the beneficial intestinal bacteria which are associated with health and well-being.

On a palatable, low sugar, linseed and alfalfa base, easily mixed in feed and suitable for all horses and ponies, including foals (under veterinary supervision).
